Funds are available to purchase equipment for the research projects of students participating in the IGERT program. Each IGERT student may apply for a portion of these funds by writing an equipment proposal describing the nature of their research project and how the equipment requested for the project would be used. The text of the proposals should be no longer than 4 pages (double spaced), including figures and budget. Relevant previous work on the research topic should be cited and referenced (the 4-page limit does not include the list of references cited). In addition, the proposal should include a 1-page Curriculum Vita (CV) of the student requesting the funds. The CV should include the educational background of the student (degrees starting with a bachelor's degree or equivalent, institutions, and dates), academic honors, publications (include no more than 5), and previous research experience.
Normally, only a single request will be funded for each student. However, this does not mean that funding is guaranteed or automatic. The request for funding must be deemed useful and appropriate for funding a viable research project. Some proposals for funding may be rejected, in which case the proposal will be returned to the student with the evaluations of the reviewers. Such proposals may be resubmitted or a new proposal may be submitted at a later date.
Proposals may be submitted any time while a student is supported under the IGERT program. Requests for funding will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the IGERT Program. Equipment that is requested under this program is intended to support the research of the IGERT student making the request. Computers, for example, to be used primarily for writing, e-mail, etc., shall not constitute an appropriate request.
Equipment purchased under this program is owned by the University and is expected to remain with the research group sponsoring the IGERT student.
Proposals will be reviewed at the monthly meeting of the IGERT Program Committee.
The average amount awarded is expected to be approximately $2,000.
Students receiving grants are required to write a 1-2 page report on how the equipment was used 18 months after the award is granted.
