| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: What is the application deadline for the Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) IGERT program? The application deadline for Fall 2008 admission is September 2nd, 2008. Current UCSB graduate students may also apply at any time during the academic year for admission the following quarter. Should I apply to one of the IGERT departments in order to be eligible for the CSE IGERT Fellowship? You must first apply to one of the IGERT departments: Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Mechanical and Environmental Engineering and be accepted for graduate school before applying to the IGERT program. Is it required that I find a sponsoring professor before I apply to the CSE IGERT program? Having a faculty sponsor is not required, however all IGERT students will eventually select a Research Focus Group in which to work. Is the CSE IGERT Fellowship available to international students? The IGERT program has no funds to support international students. International students may participate in the IGERT Associate Program with their own funding. Limited university and department financial aid is available to outstanding students. Generally, aid is available but is highly competitive. I am interested in the CSE program and would like to visit the campus. Who should I contact to set up a schedule for my visit? You should contact the home department you have applied to for graduate school to arrange a visit to the campus. Do I have the right background to be considered for the CSE IGERT? The CSE IGERT program is open to students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. You must have a background that will enable your admission into one of the IGERT departments:Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Mechanical and Environmental Engineering along with a strong desire to do multidisciplinary computational research. How long will it take me to complete the CSE Ph.D.? The normal time to degree completion is 5 years. Can students apply to more than one academic department per year at UCSB? No. The University only allows an applicant to apply to one department per academic year. What is the minimum GPA you will accept? The minimum GPA the University will allow is a 3.0 (on a 4-point scale) calculated from your junior and senior years. In some cases, we have requested that the Graduate Division grant an exception for an applicant with a GPA of less than 3.0, but is strong in other regards (i.e. excellent GRE scores, Letters of Recommendation, resume, etc.).
